On Friday the 28th of September , CBC Transition Year went to a premiere of the French film ‘Les Intouchables’.
We met with Mr. Ferguson , Mr. Morgan and Mr. Farrell in the Trinity courtyard at 9:30. It was good weather out and not a cloud in sight. As soon as the roll was taken, the classes organized and all the rest, we made a 15 minute long journey from Trinity to Smithfield to the Lighthouse Cinema.
The cinema was very big and fancy with a beautiful foyer and a bar, not like the IMC out in Dun Laoghaire! The Lighthouse Cinema is famous for showing foreign films , and has gained a good image because of it.
As we made our way to the screen, we sat down and the role was taken again. Nobody was missing, so the movie began without delay.
The movie was about 2 hours long. The plot was about a paralysed Frenchman, Philippe, from a wealthy background who is looking for a carer to help him. He takes on a black man named Driss from the Parisian estates (‘les cités’) on the outskirts (‘les banlieues’) of Paris, which are basically the definition of a ghetto. The story unfolds about the relationship between the two and the challenges they both face at home as well as with each other.
This film became the top grossing film in France, and in my opinion, I'm not surprised! The film is humourous, happy and sad at times. But there is not one flaw, brilliant actors, perfect setting and the characters themselves are fantastic. This film is up there with La Haine for me!
The film deserves 5 stars and nearly all of the people who saw it with me don’t disagree. All in all , it was a pretty good day!

On the 28th of September, the Fourth Years were brought on a trip to the Lighthouse Cinema in town. We had to meet at Trinity College at 9:30. When all of us had arrived, the roll was taken we left Trinity College and made are way to the theatre. We walked up the quays and made our way to Smithfield, a former horse and vegetable market.
The Lighthouse Cinema was a beautiful building- very modern and well maintained. After some of us bought some snacks for our early morning screening we settled into our private cinema. The film, “Les Intouchables” was being shown on general release later that day but we were the first to see the film in Ireland. The movie was about a wealthy disabled man who hires a former convict from the projects in France to be his helper. Over the course of the movie they form a great bond and friendship which lasts for the rest of their lives. The film was very entertaining and was liked by all of the students.
On behalf of the students in Transition Year I would like to thank Mr Ferguson, Mr Morgan and Mr Farrell who brought us to the theatre and made sure we got home safely. I really enjoyed the trip and I will remember the movie fondly.
